While diabetes may be a common disease, it’s important for every individual to receive the personalized care they need. For many with diabetes, this starts with education, so that you and your loved ones may understand the latest in treatment and technology to achieve a healthier tomorrow.

Western Wisconsin Health offers diabetes self-management education (DSME) designed to help those with diabetes better understand and manage the disease within the patterns of their everyday life. As part of these classes, participants will learn about the process and treatments for diabetes, along with healthy ways to prevent and control diabetes complications. The Diabetes Self-Management Education Program is recognized by the American Diabetes Association.

The program begins with a meeting with a diabetes educator and a registered dietitian, followed by group or individual sessions to complete the 10 hours of initial education. After initial education, most insurance plans typically cover meeting with a diabetes nurse educator and dietitian on a yearly basis.
